Chrome tabs group to be renamed ‘chrome tabs group’
Groups are getting renamed as Google is overhauling the way it categorizes web content and makes it easier for users to find content.
The company is taking a page from Apple’s playbook, which has a group called “app groups” and a separate “tab groups” group.
In Google’s new group structure, “tabs” will no longer be the default, as they were in the past.
The group’s role will be that of “chrome tabs,” which are the apps that Google wants users to be able to access on the Chrome browser.
“This is really about giving people the tools they need to find the content they’re looking for and get it on their phone or tablet or whatever,” said Eric Schmidt, Google’s senior vice president of engineering, during a Google I/O developer conference in February.
Google said this change will be rolled out in a rolling release over the next several months.
The change is designed to bring more visibility to tabs on a device, and it will also make it easier to see what other tabs are available to users.
“We wanted to have an easy way to identify tabs for our users,” Schmidt said.
Users will be able now to easily access a user’s tabs by tapping on the “Tab Groups” icon next to the “Home” button on a tab page, as well as on a group’s name or title.
“If you see a tab that has a bunch of other tabs, you can tap that and it’ll bring you a list of all of those other tabs,” Schmidt added.
The new “tab group” design will also allow users to easily filter the tabs that are available for browsing on a site.
In addition, the new tab group structure will include an “Advanced” tab to allow users more control over the placement of tabs, which will be based on whether they’re in the “Advanced Groups” or “Advanced Tab Groups.”
The new design should help users more easily find what they’re interested in when browsing, but the company isn’t ruling out the possibility that more features could come later, including the ability to see which tab is the primary tab for a particular page.
Users can now share their tabs in groups on Google+ The new tab groups will also include a “Share” tab, which lets users share tabs in different groups.
Users who share tabs with other users will also be able see which tabs are active on their own device.
Schmidt told developers during the Google I /O developer event that this feature will be in place “over the next few months.”
“When we have the features to get this done and we have all of our engineers working on it, it will be done,” Schmidt told the crowd.
