Trump ‘absolutely’ will seek to get Mexico to pay for border wall
GEOGRAPHY The Trump administration has announced a plan to fund a border wall with Mexico, a move that would likely require congressional approval.
The White House announced the funding Thursday, and the Mexican government announced its support in a statement.
It called the proposal “the most progressive approach to building a wall that has ever been tried.”
It also called the idea “a dream of a generation.”
Trump has made border security a centerpiece of his campaign.
In a recent interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, the president-elect said he would “probably have Mexico pay for it.”
“I will do that,” Trump said.
“I’ve said it before, and I will say it again.
You’re going to have to pay.
I mean, you’re going.
And that’s right, and it’s the most progressive, and that’s the best idea in the world.”
Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has said he supports a wall along the southern border, which would cost billions of dollars and take decades to construct.
Trump also called for a wall with China and Mexico to be built on both sides of the border, though that plan has not yet been implemented.
